Volunteers Provide Comfort
One of the newest service areas for volunteers at <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />AllianceCommunityHospital is the “Soft Touch†program. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
This process involves provision of a very gentle rub of a patient's hands and arms - either with or without a lotion or an oil. Presently, four ACH volunteers provide this soothing service to patients, and even visitors, as a way of providing relaxation and a personal touch to them.
Victoria Hoover, Linda Phillips, Hope Boden and Roselette Sommers are the four volunteers who have chosen to be trained in “Soft Touch†and it is proving to be as rewarding to them as it is relaxing to patients.
“I love having the opportunity to provide this service to our patients, especially when I can feel them relax as I am doing it; some even fall asleep during the process. It is just such a wonderful feeling to know I have helped someone in such a special way,†said Hoover.
“Last week a new mother was in labor, and I provided the soft touch. What a difference it made for her!†she said.
Volunteers who provide this service undergo a two-hour training session to help them learn the technique, as well as to learn about the hospital's protocols for patients.
Linda Phillips said, “I cannot tell you how much I enjoy the opportunity to make such a positive difference for our patients. I leave here feeling that I have gained more than I have given, and I look forward to each visit. This is truly a wonderful program.â€
