Alliance Community Hospital Obstetrics Unit Closing Effective May 20, 2016
For Immediate Release
Written – May 11, 2016
ALLIANCE – The Board of Trustees of Alliance Community Hospital has moved the deadline to close the hospital’s obstetrics unit from July 1 to Friday, May 20, 2016 due to a shortage of nurses to staff the unit.
According to Hospital CEO Stan Jonas, it had been hoped that the unit could stay open until July 1 to provide ample time to accommodate the transition for those expecting to deliver at Alliance Community Hospital to make arrangements for deliveries at other nearby hospitals.
After the March 11 announcement however, several of the 13 nurses who were affected by the elimination of the department, sought and found employment elsewhere, thus leading hospital officials to close the unit earlier than planned.
“We will continue to work with our local doctors and their patients to assure a smooth transition,” Jonas said. “But with patient safety as our top priority, we need to close the unit by Friday May 20.”
As stated in an earlier press release, Jonas said that “other than the actual delivery, patients will continue to receive all other OB/GYN services, including prenatal and post-partum care, here in Alliance. They will only have to travel to Canton for deliveries, and we will provide transportation to Canton for patients who need that service.”
