Low Blood Supply Levels Hit Home
Vacations, camps and gardening are all part of the summer season. Unfortunately, so is a low supply of blood/blood products. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Northeast Ohio is experiencing dangerously low levels of blood and blood products due to low donor turnout. This is not exclusive to our area; neighboring regions in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana are also experiencing extremely low levels.
This means many of the 57 hospitals served by the northeastern American Red Cross may not be able to secure the necessary blood needed for even one trauma patient requiring anywhere from 4-100 units of blood and blood products to save his/her life.
It also means that the 19 counties served by this ARC region will not receive the minimum 900 units of blood needed every day. It could mean a loved one may have to be placed on a waiting list in hopes that the necessary blood products arrive when needed.
The AllianceCommunityHospital will hold its monthly blood drive on Thursday, August 14th from 12 noon until 5:45 p.m. Donors can schedule their own appointment by going online to www.givelife.org or by calling the volunteer office at 330-596-7822 or 7821.
Grinder's “Above and Beyond†of Alliance is the Business Express sponsor of the month, so all donors will receive coupons for a free cappuccino or sundae. There will also be drawings for additional gift certificates from the restaurant.
All donors from June 1st through September 1st will be entered into a drawing for one of 5-$500 gas cards or the grand prize of Gas for a Year, a $3,000 value.
AllianceValueCity, a corporate co-sponsor with AllianceCommunityHospital, is hosting a public drive on Friday, August 8th from 2:00 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the store onState Street in Alliance. Walk-ins are welcome.
Also co-hosting drives during the month in conjunction with ACH are corporate sponsors Terry's TireTown, August 11th from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. (for company employees only) and Alliance Castings on August 14th from 12 noon until 6:00 p.m. (for company employees only).
Donors must be at least 17 years of age and weigh no less than 110 pounds. A photo ID or ARC blood donor card must be presented at the time of donation.
