Critical Blood Shortage
The American Red Cross has alerted all donations centers of a critical shortage of blood and blood products in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Northeast Ohio which includes our community.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Due to recent severe weather, which has included flooding, several donations sites have had to cancel their drives while other drives had very poor attendance. Therefore, the inventory is extremely low. The following is a listing of the current inventory: O Positive – 15 hour supply, O Negative – 8 hour supply, A Positive – 44 hour supply, A Negative – 33 hour supply, B Positive – 40 hour supply, B Negative – 35 hour supply, AB Positive – 18 day supply and AB Negative – 3.5 day supply.
Considering the minimum inventory standard for all blood types is a 3-day supply, it is obvious how far below that standard the supply is.
Only 37% of the population donates blood. If you have not started this “habitâ€, this is the perfect time to do so. Please encourage family and friends to also make a commitment to help others by donating blood. An hour of your time is worth a lifetime to three individuals.
The AllianceCommunityHospital is hosting their annual blood drive this Thursday, August 16, 2007 from 12 - 5:45 p.m.
Please call the Volunteer department at the hospital, 330-596-7822 or 330-596-7821, to schedule an appointment or go online at www.givelife.org and schedule your own appointment.
