Alliance Farmers' Market thrives with help of three major sponsors
The Alliance Farmers' Market is almost at its halfway point in the 2016 season. Approximately $35,000 has been kept in the Alliance community and has helped the local farmers and small businesses that set up every week at the market.
The Alliance Farmers' Market would not be able to thrive without the help of its sponsors. This season the market is sponsored by three local businesses: Alliance Community Hospital, Rodman Public Library and the University of Mount Union.
Alliance Community Hospital is the financial sponsor of the market. With its generous donation the market board is able to pay for insurance and the live musicians who perform at the market every week. Each week the hospital sets up a community table and provides free health screenings to all the market patrons. All of the nurses at the table every Saturday are volunteers.
Rodman Public Library brought its bookmobile for the first half of the season so kids and adults can check out and return books without having to go to the library. The bookmobile also provides the opportunity for market patrons and community members to receive their very own library card if they don't already own one. This opportunity helps to draw people to the market and encourages community members to read while also providing them with the means to do so. This will be the last week the bookmobile will be at the market.
The University of Mount Union is the third sponsor of the Alliance Farmers' Market. For the past few years, Mount Union has been providing the market with student employees and volunteers. This year the market has employed two students who act as the market managers. These students are responsible for setting up the market, tearing it down, running the office, keeping track of the books, and helping to make the market better each year.
Each week, local businesses and organizations have the opportunity to set up a table at the market to inform patrons about what they do in the Alliance community. This week there are no community tables signed up to be at the market. There is still time to reserve a spot by contacting Abby Honaker at 330-204-4663.
There is also a live musician to entertain market vendors and patrons each week. This week the performer will be Michelle Fergason.
The Alliance Farmers' Market is open from 9 a.m. to noon every Saturday through Oct. 22. The market is located in the Caboose parking lot in downtown Alliance, at the corner of Main Street and Mechanic Avenue.
