In keeping with the national observation of March as Nutrition Month, Alliance Community Hospital is offering free information to staff members and visitors about healthy eating. The data will feature a new topic each week and will be available for public consumption through one of the main display cases in the main hallway just off the lobby.
"Since 2010, the US Department of Agriculture has been refining and reshaping Dietary Guidelines for Americans. In celebration of National Nutrition Month 2012 we want to bring these new messages to our colleagues and visitors, in hopes of offering them information that will help them make healthy eating choices," said Dawn Wagner RD/LD of the ACH Nutritional Services Department. Wagner is coordinating the month-long initiative.
Wagner explained how, in 2010, the U.S. Department of Agriculture developed new dietary guidelines for Americans, which were officially published in February 2011 and encouraged Americans to increase intake of fruits and vegetables as well as to balance caloric intake by increasing the amount whole grains eaten up to 50 percent and dramatically decreasing the intake of salt, saturated fats and sugars.
"In June 2011 the Food Guide Pyramid was retired and a new MyPlate eating guide was released," she said.
Wagner said that by September 2011 the American Dietetic Association announced that the entity would be changing its name to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. "It is the world's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals and we are proud to say, here at ACH, that five of our registered dietitians on staff hold this distinction," said Wagner, who is among them.
Wagner disclosed the nutrition topics which will be addressed throughout the month:
Thursday -- Eat Right: Get Your Plate in Shape; MyPlate -- 10 Tips to a Great Plate; Nutrition Facts Label; Women's Heart Health Recipes.
March 12 -- Go With Whole Grains; What's New in 2010 Guidelines -- Whole Grains; Heart Healthy Eating -- Fiber Tips; Fiber Recipes.
