The Alliance Community Hospital Auxiliary is now accepting applications for the Dr. James J. Thomas Scholarship. This $1,500, non-renewable scholarship is awarded annually to three local high school seniors interested in entering the medical field.
Applications are currently available in the hospital gift shop or by contacting the foundation office at 330-596-7516. Applications must be submitted along with a copy of an official high school transcript. All applications are due by March 30.
The auxiliary scholarship fund was created in 1987 to provide financial assistance to students entering the health care field. The fund was named for the late Dr. James J. Thomas, who was a retired hospital anesthesiologist who upon retirement became a hospital volunteer. His generous donation funded the beginning of the scholarship fund and has been added to over the years by fundraising done by the auxiliary.
Scholarship recipients are selected by a committee representing the auxiliary, health care professionals and the community. The committee awards points based on financial need, hospital volunteer work, school and community involvement, and general academic achievement. The 2012 scholarship chairperson is Betty Macaione.
The Alliance Community Hospital Auxiliary was founded in 1933. The purpose of the ACH Auxiliary is to promote, advance and improve the welfare of Alliance Community Hospital which is done by hosting fundraisers and events throughout the year to benefit the hospital.
